Surveyors Hit the Streets; Identify Needs
|
Great Start Project
Surveyors
were
trained in November and will soon be conducting interviews throughout
Ottawa County. In December, surveying will take place in the City of
Holland, Grand Haven and
Georgetown/Allendale Township.
In addition to face-to-face
interviewing, a teen mothers focus group will be conducted this month.
The Great Start Program of the Ottawa
Area ISD has partnered with the Diversity Alliance to conduct a research project to answer this question: "What
are the barriers to success for youth of color and "at-risk" children ages zero to five?"

Students Promoting Diversity in Their Schools
|
Calling All Colors
Since
the two fall conferences in October, Calling All Colors school groups
have been working on action plans to foster a greater appreciation for
diversity in their schools. Here are updates on their progress:
- Black
River Middle School are
broadcasting cultural music and facts during announcements. With the
help of United Way, they are also planning a diversity awareness night.
- Creekside Middle School is holding
a Book Fair as a fundraiser. They are also creating a Native American totem pole which involves each of
the students decorating their own totem face.
- Holland Christian Middle School is holding a Mix-It-Up Lunch and teaching a cultural craft to elementary students.
- Holland Christian High School
students wrote "Who Am I" poems to
self-reflect on what influences (race, age, gender, religion, etc) who
they are. They then wrote a poem about someone else in the group and
concluded many of the things listed were superficial. Therefor,
students committed to getting to know one or two others on a deeper
level. Throughout the weeks, they will write journal entries to discuss
their experiences with the larger group.
- Holland High School (8th Graders) have recently distributed a Mix-It-Up Survey to classmates. Results from the survey will help create a video about diversity and inclusion.
- Holland
High School is planning a Unity week; a different culture is highlighted each day.
- Lakeshore Middle School is holding a school-wide Mix It-Up Lunch.
- Macatawa Bay/Harbor Lights Middle Schools will be holding events during Black History month,
Chinese New Year, Women's History month, and Cinco de Mayo.
- Muskegon Community Education (MCEC) is designing a new unity banner and also recruiting new members to the group.
- Wavecrest Career Academy is
planning a Heritage Week. They will also have a speaker who is a member
of the armed forces present on experiences living in another country.
- West Ottawa High School is working on getting a
speaker to address their group and other interested students. They are also planning a Mix It Up Lunch and a school-wide Unity Week.
- White Pines Middle School has
been designing their new unity banner; the theme is "Tolerance -
Believe In It". Students have also been presenting school-challenges to
foster a more accepting
environment.
- Zeeland East/West High Schools are
pursuing mini-grants for funding. They also established a "social
contract", which places emphasis on respect, being open-minded, and
listening.
Other Participating Schools: Corpus
Christi Catholic School, Holland Christian High School, Muskegon High
School, St. Mary's Catholic School, Spring Lake High School, and Steele
Middle School.
