Dr. Fred L. Johnson III, assistant professor of history at Hope College, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday on “The Roots of Racism and Its continuing Legacy” at St. Francis de Sales Church. The speech, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the Community Action Team of the 2001 Ottawa Area Summit on Racism. Johnson will examine the historical roots of racism in America, the ways it has been perpetuated and strengthened, its contemporary manifestations, and efforts that attempt to minimize racism’s influence.

Johnson’s primary field is 19th century U.S. history, specifically the Confederacy during the Civil War. Other areas of study include the U.S. in the 20th century, the U.S. military and Africa. He is writing a book about U.S. foreign policy in East Africa. St. Francis de Sales Church is located at 13th and Maple Avenue in Holland.
