Allendale, MI —
Three conference highlights
-
About 130 students from 10 area middle schools participated in the
14th Calling All Colors conference at Grand Valley State University on
May 4, focusing on breaking down stereotypes and understanding Middle
Eastern cultures.
-
The keynote speaker was Najila Salih, a Grand Valley graduate and
former president of the GVSU Muslim Student Association. She reflected
on diversity and experiences from her own life.
-
The students shared presentations on what they have done in their
schools to promote a greater appreciation for diversity, engaged in
diversity dialogues and participated in cooperative games.
“Calling All Colors challenges students to reflect on their own
personal biases as well as the realities of what happens in their
classrooms, lunch tables and hallways. The students have worked hard all
year to create a school where people of all racial and ethnic
backgrounds feel welcome," said Sarah Salguera, Calling All Colors program director. |
