2005 Whites Voices of America's "Whites-only Picnic"


Timeline of Events

Beginning in May, a group called "White Voices of America" began passing out flyers in Spring Lake, Ferrsburg, and Grand Haven calling for a whites only family picnic and political discussion. view flyer...

On June 01, Gail Harrison, the Executive Director of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance, was featured in the local newspaper as a guest columnist of an article titled, "Is 'Whites Only' a good thing at its core?" read article...

On June 02, The Diversity Alliance, partnering with many local diversity advocates and organizations, sponsored a Community Forum in response to the organization of the "whites-only" event. The guidelines of this forum where:
  • Respect each speaker
  • Listen with care, try to understand each other
  • Avoid debating, share own perceptions
The two major focus areas at the forum where, "What kind of community do we want to be?" and "How do we get there?" Individuals were also invited to sign a community statement. That statement read:

We, the undersigned, support a community committed to justice, equal opportunity, and mutual respect, where people of all ethnic backgrounds are invited to participate fully in the life of the community.

Over 1,000 names of support were collected and ran along with the statement in a full-age ad in the Holland Sentinel. view full page ad...
