2010 Spring High School Conference

2010 Calling All Colors High School Conference; students participating in cooperative games

Overview

The fourth annual for high school students was held on March 12, 2010 at Grand Valley State University.

The conference kicked off with a welcoming to by Shawn Watson, Student Services Coordinator for GVSU Continuing Education. This was followed by Keynote Speaker Kaifa Alsoofy from the GVSU Muslim Student association, who shared with the students reflections on diversity and experiences from her own life.

Then, student groups from each school shared presentations on what they have accomplished in their school communities to create a greater appreciation for diversity.

Following this, the students broke out into dialogue groups and discussed stereotypes surrounding people of Middle Eastern Cultures.

Students were lead through a series of activities which opened up meaningful discussion on their understandings and misunderstandings. The dialogue culminated by watching the video "A Land Called Paradise."

In response to the dialogue one student reflected, "If you take the time to learn about a culture, you won't believe the stereotypes. Now, I take the time to get to know people."

In the afternoon, students participated in cooperative games in which they interacted with peers from other schools and racial and ethnic backgrounds, creating an opportunity to work together and make new friends.

One student commented, "Calling All Colors has showed me that our school should and can change in order to make all of us better people." Another student responded, "At Calling All Colors, we all feel like we belong."
